I know you will enjoy the experience, and your students will be re-invigorated to work at their top levels of challenge.
Everyone wins!"
--Susan Winebrenner

The content emphasizes realistic, practical applications that effectively promote rigor and engagement in learning environments. The word rigor is used as an acrostic to organize the contents of this book and to clarify the five instructional priorities required in a rigorous learning environment. The current focus of education and standards involves understanding how instruction influences students' future, including their academic lives and careers. Hence, the main objective of this book is to explore the instructional practices that enable students to progress toward autonomy, future competency, and success. In a rigorous learning environment, educators:

  • Recognize realistic and relevant high-level expectations;
  • Integrate complexity and depth in content, process, and product;
  • Generate cognitive skills;
  • Orchestrate support systems and scaffold success; and
  • Refine assessments to guide instruction and benefit learners.
