Let students loose their imaginations while remaining producers! Incorporate skills from multiple content areas into creative learning opportunities for students with these engaging activities. Use the Creative Problem Solving with Literature forms to guide students' analytical thinking and discussions about literature. Or, engage students' in content-driven learning opportunities with one of the five detailed, hands-on performance tasks to stimulate your students' creative problem solving skills and differentiate your instruction.

  • TASK 1: The Alien, Grades K-6
Students work in groups using trash and recyclable materials to build a three dimensional alien that is exactly two feet tall and free standing.
  • TASK 2: Newspaper Bridges, Grades 1-8
Students use newspaper and tape to build a standing bridge that is a minimum of six inches tall, 12 inches long, and supports a minimum of four pounds for 60 seconds.
  • TASK 3: Architecture, Grades 2-12
Using the drawing feature of an integrated computer software package, students replicate the facade of one urban and one residential building. Students compare the geometric features and patterns found in the architectural structure of each building.
  • TASK 4: The Golf Course, Grades 4-12
Students work in teams using trash and recyclable materials to construct one section of a miniature golf course while operating within a budget. Then, the class plays a round of golf!
  • TASK 5: Road Rally, Grades 4-12
Students work in groups to design and construct a self-propelled vehicle using materials that team purchases with allotted money. Then, the students' creations compete in races!

Six authors of the tasks share their experience by providing the background information, criteria, procedures, and reproducible forms for student use, evaluation, and visitor information.

See what some creative students from Cartwright School District in Phoenix, Arizona have been doing in their Gifted Cluster Program!

These activities were created by gifted students ranging in grades from 1st -8th that are placed into their Gifted Cluster Program. Cartwright has in place a school wide cluster model at all 20 of their schools. Students placed in this program in addition to daily tiered classroom instruction are provided enrichment services during which they completed the following activities.
